Eagles Lair

The homeowner’s of the Eagles Lair will soon be the gathering together in their beautiful log home. The homeowner is also the General Contractor, and has a created a well designed floor plan, utilizing the space well. This home is 24 sq. feet by 36 sq. feet with 864 square feet on the main floor. The main floor’s open floor plan design allows a cozy dining area off the kitchen and take in the morning sites and sounds of the woods and lakes outside. Upon entering the home, the fire place will provide warmth and serve as a focal point in the living area. The main floor plan has the Master Bedroom with a large walk in closet, full bathroom, kitchen with dining area, and great room. There will be a loft and a walkout basement. Off the covered porch entryway is an eight ft. by 36 ft. deck. This space will be fully enjoyed taking in spectacular Minnesota sunrises and sunsets.  Construction began August 16, 2020. Completed on site, October 26, 2020.   Reassembled December 8, 2020.

10/28/20 The Eagle's Lair is ready to be reassembled! This will be in a couple of weeks!
10/26/20 The Eagles Lair is finished on ALH site, and will be loaded onto trailers next week.
The arches are cut on all the log corners. This area is the covered porch entryway.
The loft floor joists are scribed and pre-flattened for the flooring.
10-26-20 Once the pitch cuts are determined, chaulk lines are snapped and then the logs are cut.

10/9/20 Jason is carving out the notch where the loft floor joist will be set in. The flat cuts you see are pre-lattened for the flooring to be adhered to.
10-9-20 The porch logs are extended out and set on temporary posts. Arches will be cut out on the log ends.

Each notch is cut out first with a chain saw for the "rough notch".

The final cuts of each notch are done by hand.
Each log is scribed to the log below it. Jason is cuttting the "Swedish Cope" , also refered to as the lateral.
Insulation is put in the opening Jason is creating when the log home is reassembled on the home owner's site.
9-15-20 First half of 6th course is scribed.
8-31-20 The homeowner came be to check on the progress of his home. He is also the General Contractor of his log home. He has finished the garage, and getting his property ready for the log shell.

The rough notch is done on the 3rd course. The log will be set back onto the ground to finish the final notch.
8-27-20 The first half of 4th course is being set up on the house.
Jason is cutting out the bottom of the log which is called the lateral cut. The fit it creates between the two logs is called the Swedish Cope.

Jon was taught how to build with the interlocking V-Joint notch - the notch used log handcrafters from British Columbia.
8-24-20 Gary uses a chisel and mallet to carve in the final notch for a perfect fit to the log next to him.

Gary measures the log, and squares them on the foundation.
Each log weighs 50 to 75 lbs. a foot, so this 40 foot log weighs about 2,500 pounds
The second half of first course is set up and will be measured for placement and will be ready to scribe the home's first notches!
We use a front end loader to move and set the logs onto the foundation.

8-17-20 The first course of logs are split and the two larger logs will be peeled prior to setting.
When the logs arrive to the construction yard, the logs are debarked by hand.
